How to Plan a Modular Data Center: 6 Decisions Before Selecting an Architecture
Planning a modular data center starts with the workload and availability target. The design must also reflect site conditions, deployment constraints and the required expansion path.
1. Define the IT load and growth path
Document the initial IT load in kW, expected rack density and expansion path. A single all-in-one cabinet may suit an edge site, while larger facilities may use multiple rows, container modules or clustered pods.
2. Confirm the installation environment
Indoor rooms and outdoor compounds create different requirements. Review weather protection, civil works, transportation, acoustic control and maintenance access before selecting the module format.
3. Select a cooling approach that matches density
Precision air cooling suits conventional rack densities. AI and HPC projects may require chilled water, in-row cooling, CDU interfaces and direct-to-chip liquid cooling. The cooling architecture must be defined together with rack density and water conditions.
4. Set the availability target
Define redundancy early. Common approaches include N, N+1 and 2N. This choice affects UPS topology, generator interfaces, chillers, pumps and distribution paths.
5. Choose a factory-prefabricated deployment path
Factory integration reduces on-site work and makes schedules more predictable. IT, power, cooling, monitoring and fire-safety systems can be integrated and tested before shipment according to the project scope.
6. Prepare the engineering brief
Provide the project location, IT load, rack density, redundancy target, cooling preference, grid and generator conditions, and required deployment timeline.
